If you’ve been on TikTok, you know that creating content can be done on the fly but actually getting that content seen? That’s a whole other story. That’s where hashtags come into play! By using the right trending or relevant hashtags for your content, you’ll be able to get more and more eyeballs viewing your videos. And that’s why you’re making TikToks in the first place, isn’t it? If you’re looking to master the art of the hashtag, we’ve got you. Learn everything you need to know about TikTok hashtags and how to make them work for your content.

  1. What are TikTok hashtags?

What are TikTok hashtags?

First things first, what the heck is a TikTok hashtag? TikTok hashtags are similar to how Instagram hashtags and Twitter hashtags work—they help categorize content uploaded to the app so users can quickly and easily find it.
For example, if you search the hashtag #travel, you’ll get a bunch of travel-related videos.
And the best part of these hashtags? They’re clickable! So you can click on the hashtag of your choice and be taken to a page with lots of other content using that same hashtag.

Why use TikTok hashtags?

Now that you know what they are, why in the world should you use them? For plenty of reasons!
The main one though: It helps with your reach beyond just the people that follow you.
Hashtags are a great way for TikTok to know what kind of content you’re making and serve it to the right people who will actually want to engage with the content.
If you’re making cat content, tag the video with #cats and your video will be seen by people who freaking love cats and will likely engage with your video (it’s me—I am the cat person going to engage with your video).
Another thing users can do is follow a specific hashtag on TikTok and if you’re using that particular hashtag, you’ll end up on their feed.
Win-win.
Using hashtags is also a great way for you to build your community online. If you’re a brand and want to build your following a bit more, using a branded hashtag that people can use themselves will be a great way to spread the word about your brand and business while also collecting user-generated content on TikTok.

How to research hashtags on TikTok

Figuring out which hashtags to use on TikTok can be a challenge if you’re not sure where to even begin! Where should you start? Think about your industry and niche first and start looking up keywords that relate to it and expand out.

How many hashtags should you use on TikTok?

While TikTok doesn’t have a set limit on how many hashtags you can use, it does limit the number of characters you can use in the caption to 300. You can use the entire caption to use hashtags or just use a small amount. The world is your oyster.

How to increase the number of TikTok hashtags you can use

If you’ve run out of room in your caption to add hashtags, don’t fear! You can add hashtags to comment under the video.
However, the algorithm doesn’t prioritize these hashtags the same way they do the ones in captions, but they can help with discoverability!

What does FYP mean?

FYP on TikTok means “for you page.” It’s all the content that TikTok believes you’re interested in based on your likes and engagements on the app.

Should you use #ForYou, #ForYouPage, or #FYP on TikTok?

These are incredibly popular hashtags so we say use them with caution. As they have millions of views and videos on that hashtag, your content is likely to get lost in the crowd if you use it. But that’s not to say it won’t be seen by anyone, so use it sparingly and don’t expect instant results.
