Well, it’s officially here: Instagram brought back the much-requested chronological feed, along with a new feed called “Favorites.”
Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, explained in a recent video why they decided to make the change (outside them being forced to make the change because the government told them to):
“We want you to be able to shape Instagram into the best possible experience, and giving you ways to quickly see what you’re most interested in is an important step in that direction.”

Now on Instagram, your Instagram feed will have three different options:
Home (main): This is the Instagram we’ve come to know over the past few years. It shows ranked and personalized content for you.
Following: The chronological feed people have been asking to have back for years and years.
Favorites: A second chronological feed with content from up to 50 accounts you have selected to favorites, like friends, family, or your favorite brands and content creators.
To access these new feeds, you need to click the Instagram logo in the left corner of the home page. Don’t freak out if you don’t have access to it just yet! It’s slowly started rolling out to all users.
While this was what a lot of people were wanting, there are a lot of creators and Instagram experts who say … this might not be what people think they are wanting. Back in 2016, when Instagram did away with chronological feed, there was a lot less competition on the app which made engagement and reach a lot easier.
Now with more than a billion active users and people competing left, right, and center, having a chronological feed could end up getting your content lost in the shuffle of the hundreds of other accounts your followers follow.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the future and if people actually switch their accounts to people they follow or if they will remain on the Home Screen.
