Well, well, well. In a shocking turn of events, Meta is stealing another social media platform’s idea (if you can’t tell this is sarcasm, this is sarcasm). Meta announced this week that they will be testing a new pair verification for Instagram and Facebook for $11.99. Sound familiar? Like … Twitter familiar? So what exactly does this verification test mean and what do you get with it? Let’s dive into Meta Verified and what it means for you.
What is Meta Verified?
According to The Zuck, Meta Verified is a “subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support. This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services.”
How quickly this rollout will happen and whether or not it’ll have the same fate as Twitter when Twitter first rolled out the feature (i.e. people impersonating others) still remains to be seen, but getting direct access to customer support? That could be the key reason to spend $11.99 each month.
How do you sign up for Meta Verified?
At the moment, Meta Verified is being tested only in New Zealand and Australia. And hopefully, the rest of the world will be allowed if the initial test goes well.
But to be able to sign up, you’ll need:
- Submit a government ID that matches the name and photo you have on Instagram and Facebook
With Meta verified, users will also get access to exclusive stickers for Stories and Reels and 100 free stars per month (Meta’s version of digital currency).
Can businesses sign up for Meta Verified?
Currently, Meta said that businesses can’t sign up for Meta Verified. You also can’t change your profile name, username, birthday, or profile picture without doing the verification process all over again.
Sounds fun.
Why is Meta Verified a thing?
While it’s definitely very similar to what Twitter is doing, it also seems like Meta is taking verification and authenticity a bit more seriously (I’d really like to know when they start working on getting rid of all the bots looking at my Instagram Stories).
How much does Meta Verified cost?
If you are looking to get your account verified, you can pay $11.99/month when you subscribe on the web, or $14.99 when you subscribe on the app.
Both Facebook and Instagram have to be applied for separately, so each would cost you $11.99/$14.99 separately.
What if I already have a verified badge? Does anything happen to it?
According to Meta, nothing changes will happen if you already have a badge.
